What to do if…
If stopped by an officer:
- Move your vehicle safely to the right, out of traffic and off the roadway.
- Keep your hands visible at all times, preferably on the steering wheel. In low light conditions, you may want to turn on the dome light so that the officer can see you and the interior of your vehicle.
- Let the officer know what you are doing before reaching into your pocket, purse or glove compartment.
- Remain in the vehicle unless the officer asks you to get out. When exiting your vehicle make sure your hands are visible.
- Display your driver’s license and proof of insurance upon the officer’s request, this is a requirement of State of Texas law.
- Allow the officer to explain why the stop was made, describe the violation and what will occur as a result of the stop.
- Remain calm and don’t argue. Remember that signing the citation does not indicate an admission of guilt. You will have an opportunity to state your case in court.
- Avoid using cell phones or smoking during the traffic stop.
- Once the officer allows you to leave, check the traffic and carefully re-enter the roadway.
If you are involved in a vehicle accident:
- If the vehicle is drivable, move it safely out of the roadway.
- Exchange information with the other driver (name, address, phone number, vehicle information, insurance)
- Display your driver’s license and proof of insurance to the officer when requested
- Be calm and cooperative. Answer questions truthfully.
- If you get a citation, remember that signing the citation is not an admission of guilt
- Once the officer allows you to leave, check traffic and safely re-enter the roadway.

If you witness an accident:
If you are a witness to an accident and have time to wait for an officer, please do so as your input can be valuable. Display your identification to the Officer when requested. Stay calm and answer questions truthfully. Your input will help the officer put the whole accident together.
If you have received a citation:
- Please contact the Uvalde Municipal Court within 10 days.
- Failure to appear or contact the court in the 10 days can result in an arrest warrant being issued and possible additional charges.
- If you are stopped while driving after a warrant has been issued, this can result in arrest and vehicle impoundment.
